SEATTLE, WA – Tech giant Amazon has announced a significant investment in the AI startup Anthropic, with plans to invest up to $4 billion. This move puts the company in direct rivalry with tech giants like Microsoft, Meta, Google, and Nvidia.

Initially, Amazon will invest $1.25 billion for a minority stake in Anthropic, which has a notable focus on AI-powered text analysis chatbots, similar to Google's Bard and Microsoft-backed OpenAI. As part of the deal, Amazon retains the option to increase its investment up to a total of $4 billion.

Anthropic is already known for its ambitious goals, aiming to create a "frontier model" dubbed "Claude-Next," which promises to be ten times more capable than today's most powerful AI. However, this endeavor requires a substantial investment of around $1 billion over the next 18 months. In comparison, Microsoft has invested as much as $11 billion in OpenAI over the years.

What makes Amazon's investment particularly strategic is its ability to provide Anthropic with both financial support and powerful computing resources through Amazon Web Services (AWS). Anthropic will use AWS for critical workloads, safety research, and developing future foundation models, employing AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips to build, train, and deploy these models.

Amazon’s Take on the AI

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating that it could "improve many customer experiences, short and long-term." He also highlighted the value of AWS's new managed service, Amazon Bedrock, which allows companies to build generative AI applications using foundation models.

Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, said he envisions a future where AI continues to scale and advance rapidly. He believes that the industry will see unprecedented developments in the coming years, far surpassing what we witness today.

This partnership benefits Amazon by expanding its presence in the AI industry, while for Anthropic, it offers access to substantial resources and computing power. The startup, which already boasts investments from Google, Spark Capital, Salesforce, and others, has raised $2.7 billion to date and was valued at $5 billion in its last funding round.
